Middle School Reading Apps and Websites
Common Sense Education provides terrific tech tools to help teachers support students' academic growth specific to middle school student needs. It includes links to apps and websites to target instruction around phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, diagnostic tools, interactive e-readers, close reading, and online reading communities to help middle school students get engaged around high-interest topics.

Interactive Word Walls
Word Walls are a collection of words strategically displayed on classroom walls to achieve a specific instructional purpose. They are used frequently at the elementary level and the practice often extends into middle school classrooms. The key term is “interactive”; an instructional tool to use not just display. Simply showcasing words on a wall will not improve student’s reading ability, writing skills, and vocabulary. Research indicates that interactive word walls used in middle grades benefits student achievement. The document attached includes activities and resources teachers can incorporate into daily instruction to improve comprehension, writing, and vocabulary using word walls.

Alternatives to Round Robin Reading in the Middle School Classrooms
Round Robin Reading (RRR) continues to be a common practice in middle grade ELA classrooms and yet it has been proven to be an ineffective way to spend instructional time. In RRR, students read orally from a common text, one student after another, while the rest of the class follows along in their copies of the text. The Infographic linked lists research-supported strategies to replace RRR in middle school (MS) classrooms.

Read Aloud Strategies in Middle Grade Classrooms
Reading aloud to students often ends at the elementary level, yet extensive research indicates that reading to students in middle grades has numerous benefits on student achievement. The attached menu offers research-based strategies on how to embed structured read aloud opportunities into daily practice.

Unravel Complex Texts Using Scaffolding Strategies in Middle School Classrooms
The North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCoS) places a strong emphasis on the ability to closely read complex texts. Standards 1 and 10 specifically ask students to read closely and comprehend increasingly complex texts. The teacher’s role in facilitating close reading instruction is to gradually release responsibility to the students through intentional scaffolds, moving from an environment where the teacher models for students to one where students employ the strategies on their own when they read independently. The attached LiveBooklet offers research-based strategies that support all students in accessing complex texts through scaffolding instruction in middle school (MS) classrooms.

Text Set Project - Middle School Text Sets
The NCDPI ELA Section is collecting middle grade text sets developed by teachers across the state. We want to showcase the text sets created by educators in grades 6-8 for teachers to access for instructional use during the 2016-2017 school year. If you are interested in participating, please use the attached template as you develop your text set. You may also consult the guide and sample text sets to inform your work. We greatly appreciate your participation and hope you will contribute to our state bank of text sets. Please send text sets to for consideration.
